My Spouse’s Journey With Cancer Of The Breast

When my spouse was told she had breast cancer was something I was not ready for. The most difficult aspect was waiting to figure out just how poor her disease was. Luckily, her cancer was noticed while in the early stages and not advanced breast cancer. She did not have cancer in any of her lymph nodes and the cancer was small. But she went through three tries at breast preserving surgery. Every one of those times the margins were found to be positive for the cancer. After the third attempt the surgeon recommended a mastectomy. This was more significant surgery followed by breast reconstruction. Plus after that 5 years of hormonal therapy. In many ways she was fortuitous. She did not have metastatic breast cancer. She did not need chemotherapy due to the fact her cancer reacts better to hormone therapy than to chemotherapy. My wife doing wonderfully now. This is an experience, however, that I would not wish on anyone else. And I cannot imagine what families must go through in cases where the diagnosis is one of metastatic breast cancer. My heart goes out to anyone affected by this breast cancer.
